Volunteers Needed To Play With Homeless Children

Monday, March 16, 2015

Horizons for Homeless Children is looking for fun and dependable volunteers to be Playspace Activity Leaders (PALs) and play with children living in homeless shelters in Central Massachusetts in their Playspace Program. The organization is one of just a few that focuses on homeless youth and their developmental needs and is recognized as leader nationwide in education for homeless children. Because homelessness often inflicts chronic stress and trauma on children due to inconsistent living situations and relationships, exposure to physical and substance abuse, and lack of play, there is often emotional and cognitive damage.

The Playspace Program uses play as an essential tool for development. Spaces include areas for literacy, arts and crafts, dramatic play and infants, and are stocked with books, toys and art supplies. The desired volunteers, the Playspace Activity Leaders, are required to commit 2 hours of play per week for at least 6 months. Day and evening hours are available and training is provided. The next training session will be held on Saturday, March 21 from 9AM to 3PM in Hudson, MA. Additional training dates and locations are available.
