Worcester East Middle Students to Watch Lunar Eclipse on Sunday

Friday, September 25, 2015

On Sunday night, Worcester East Middle students, parents and teachers will gather to view a total eclipse as the full moon passes the Earth's shadow as it orbits.

As part of their 'Art & Science' program, East Middle science teacher Howard Fain and art teacher Stacy Lord will use the event to build on their eclipse education. Fain and the school's other science teachers have been educating their students on eclipses in anticipation of this total eclipse. Lord's students will create artwork inspired by the eclipse.

Fain and Lord were selected by NASA this year to participate in the Airborne Astronomy Ambassadors program. In August, the two teachers traveled to California and took part in the SOFIA program. Although mechanical problems prevented them from flying on a 747 into the stratosphere, Lord and Fain will get another opportunity when they return to the Armstrong Flight Research Center in mid-November.

The eclipse viewing at the school will run from 8:30 PM to 10:30 PM with the partial eclipse beginning at 9:07 PM and the total eclipse beginning at 10:11 PM.

Students are encouraged to continue viewing the eclipse when they return home. The total eclipse will last until 11:23 pm, when the moon emerges from the earth’s shadow, on the other side.
