Worcester’s Rusty Shovels Bring Indie and Alt. Rock to Central MA
Tuesday, May 28, 2013
Worcester's Rusty Shovels is a relatively new creation, pieces and scraps of other bands that initially came together to just have a little bit of fun, but now it appears they have begun to take things a little more seriously.
"When we started this project we kind of decided to take this one slow and not take it too seriously right away so we spent a lot of time demoing songs and perfecting our set. We're at a point now where we're ready to amp things up a bit….finally finishing our debut and getting out to play more often," says Tim Tucker, singer and guitarist in the band.
The other members of the band include Tim's wife, Kate, providing additional vocals and guitar, Jason Macierowski on drums and Dan Gill on bass. Though new, Rusty Shovels is effectively the third incarnation of this group. In the recent past, they all played together in Necktie Party and Tim, Jason and Dan played together in Das Happening.
They still play a similar style of music to their past projects. Though it is hard to place them in one narrow genre, the band is united by a common love of various forms of alternative rock, including indie, punk and garage rock. In fact, this is why Tim and Kate initially met and became friends.
"We bonded over talking about punk rock instead of participating in gym class," jokes Tim.
Their own music is all the above forms combined with their own unique flair and mixed violently in a blender. What comes out seems to be a series of contradictions, a wide-range of sounds.
"Our music is just as much loud, fast, chaotic and punk rock as it is soulful, simple, melodic and subdued. Our musical influences are all over the place. I guess that's our style if I had to say," explains Tim.
The band seems to have proven that out of chaos indeed comes order.
A Band to See Live
Rusty Shovels has performed at Ralph's Diner in Worcester numerous times, as well as other local clubs. They've also played at a number of venues in the Boston area, including Great Scott, P.A.'s Lounge, and O'Brien's.
So what should one expect to witness and hear when viewing these performers live? They will see a band that passionately cares about their music and the efforts it takes to produce it, and one that does cater to certain audiences in a vain attempt to gain popularity.
"I hope people like it and are moved by it obviously but honestly when I'm playing live, writing music or recording the audience is not my first priority. Not to say that I don't care but I try to write songs that I think sound cool. I don't spend a lot of time thinking about whether someone else feels the same about it," states Tim bluntly.
"It's nice to get on stage for 45 minutes or so and be able to feel for a little while that you're doing what you're supposed to be doing…..that your time and efforts are worth something."
Their Debut Album
As mentioned, the band is also in the process of recording their debut album in drummer Jason Macierowski's very own home recording studio, Electric Street Studios. More details to come.
"We're going to record everything we have and see what sticks," remarks Tim.
One thing can be known for sure. They will take the same passionate and independent attitude to the recording studio that they have so far so admirably brought to the stage.
