Double Stabbings Highlight Traumatic Weekend on Shrewsbury Street

Saturday, October 25, 2014

For 48 hours, Shrewsbury Street in Worcester was a breeding ground for criminal activity. Beginning last Friday night, shortly after 11pm, two waitresses from Wexford House, 503 Shrewsbury Street, were attacked by an unknown assailant as they entered their car.

The suspect came after the women with a rock raised above his head. Using the rock as a weapon, the suspect hit the windows of the car the women were in. The women honked their horn to attract attention to the situation and the suspect ran. As of this report, no arrests have been made.

Laura Capalbo, a waitress at Wexford House, said “I’ve worked there for 13 years, and nothing like this has ever happened. The girls are very shook up over this.”

Kim Morel, manager of Padavano's Place on 358 Shrewsbury Street said, "We are concerned about some of the recent happenings, but we do have faith in our local law enforcement. We hope that there will be more of a police presence during the evening hours on Shrewsbury Street."

"We would like to see a foot presence of police. Shrewsbury Street is a wonderful community and we really need to ensure that people feel safe here," said Morel.

Back-to- Back Stabbings

Early Saturday morning, at 12:11AM, a double stabbing occurred at 7 Nana Restaurant. One victim, a 38 -year -old man, suffered a life threatening stab wound to the stomach.
Shortly following that incident, at 12:47AM down the street at Union Station, a 29 -year -old man was stabbed multiple times and also suffered life threatening injuries. All three victims are expected to survive.
The stabbings at 7 Nana Restaurant, 60 Shrewsbury Street, were the result of a bar fight that left the men’s room and found it’s way out into the street after the suspect threw a bar stool at the two victims.

The incident at Union Station was the result of an altercation with a 29-year-old male who was attempting to defend a female. Part of the altercation was in response to a domestic dispute. Last reported, the victim was suffering from life-threatening injuries but is now listed in stable condition.

The identity of the suspects is being withheld due to a domestic violence law that the Massachusetts State Legislature passed in early August. This law protects the names of people who are arrested and charged with domestic violence.

The Chaos Continues
To cap the weekend off, at 11am on Sunday, there was an attempted robbery at East Side Liquors on 129 Shrewsbury Street. Several police cars responded to a report of a suspicious male looking around at cars in the parking lot.

When the owner of the liquor store confronted the individual, another suspect came from around the corner of the building pointing a gun at the owner. The suspects forced the man inside, tied his hands, and took cash from the register. The suspects fled in a vehicle outside waiting for them.

The suspects are described as one black man and one Hispanic man, both around 5'9" to 6', in their 20s and wearing dark clothing.
