The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid just released Medicare reimbursement levels for healthcare providers for the entire county for 2012, and GoLocal looked at both the highest reimbursed doctors in the Commonwealth -- and also specifically Central MA.

Dr. Brad Baker, an opthalmologist in Worcester, offered the following as context:
"Medicare believes that publishing this data will provide transparency to consumers and possibly identify fraudulent medical practices. Transparency is important, as the public has a right to know how tax dollars are being spent, but publishing figures alone, without context or an understanding of how and why certain medications are used to treat specific conditions, can be very misleading. More concerning, it can lead to an impression of abuse and mistrust between a patient and his/her physician," said Baker
Baker continued, "While it is supposed to increase transparency, and possibly expose fraudulent behavior, without context and comprehensive understanding, the benefit of such transparency may be overshadowed by the misperception of what these figures actually mean. For example, the cost of the medication and overhead associated with offering the treatment, may not be factored."
"As such publications continue, particularly if figures without explanation become the norm, it may lead to increased public scrutiny possible misinterpretations," warned Baker.
