Girls Inc. Named Grant Recipient
Wednesday, June 20, 2012
45 girls from Sullivan Middle School, Worcester East Middle School and Abby Kelley Charter School, were selected to participate in the five-year Eureka Program. The candidates were not chosen based on their present academic achievement. Rather, students were selected because of their invested interest in their academic advancement.
The Eureka Program will specifically strengthen participants’ interest and aptitude in the fields of science and technology. Each year, the program will aid the girls in securing internships and summer jobs, which will ultimately prepare them to eagerly enter college and then to seek long-term employment.
The program will begin on July 9. Girls Inc. of Worcester partnered with Clark University, Becker College and Worcester Polytechnic Institute to help foster college and university ambitions. Beginning in July, Clark University will host the Eureka Program for a two-week overnight stay to immerse the girls in a university setting while they participate in engaging learning activities. At each school, girls will encounter hands-on experiences in the fields of computer science, math, engineering, and technology.
“The Boston Scientific Foundation has had a longstanding relationship with Girls Inc. of Worcester,” said Jacquie Boas, administrator of the Boston Scientific Foundation. “This grant reaffirms our commitment to helping Girls Inc. support its mission of providing girls with enriching social and academic experiences- particularly within the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) fields- that might not otherwise be available. The Eureka Program is a great example of this.”
