WEATHER UPDATE: Storm Will Dump Bulk of Heavy Snow Late Thursday

This is certainly a slow developing storm system. The off and on precipitation we’ve had around the area today has not been associated with the main storm center which is still pounding the mid-Atlantic states.

As the storm center intensifies offshore we will be on the northern fringe of the heavy precipitation. There is still so much about this storm that is tricky and marginal. I am not very confident just where the heaviest snow will accumulate although the most likely spots are in Worcester County Massachusetts and the higher elevations of Providence County in Rhode Island where at least 6” are likely but chances are diminishing that there will be as much as a foot.

The bulk of the heavy, wet snow should fall from later tomorrow into Friday morning. Rain and sleet mixing in with the snow along with marginal temperatures likely will cause accumulations of 6” or less elsewhere. The dividing line between snow and rain will waver across the area from the Providence area southeastward toward the coast. Just about all rain is expected on Cape Cod.

Warnings are still up for strong, gusty northeast winds of 25-50mph with higher gusts. That in conjunction with heavy, wet snow should cause numerous power outages. The coasts of Massachusetts and Rhode Island should take another beating with moderate to heavy coastal flooding and beach erosion likely.
