The White House announced on Tuesday that it is considering sending checks to Americans to help combat the economic impact of the coronavirus outbreak.

“We are looking at sending checks to Americans immediately. Americans need cash now and the president wants to get cash now. And I mean now in the next two weeks,” said Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin during a press conference on Tuesday.

According to the Financial Times, this marks a change by the White House towards “a more aggressive economic policy response as the disease has forced the closure of schools, bars, restaurants and manufacturing plants across the country.”

According to NBC News, it is unclear who would get money and how much.

This announcement comes after U.S. Senator Mitt Romney (R-Utah) proposed giving every adult American $1,000 to help meet financial obligations.

Coronavirus Across the Globe

As GoLocalProv reported, as of Tuesday, there are 21 cases of coronavirus in Rhode Island and 197 in Massachusetts.

Across the country, there are 4,445 cases in the U.S., resulting in 81 deaths.

Globally, there are 182,029 cases resulting in 7,119 deaths.
