Worcester Barber Shops Operating Without a License

Tuesday, March 13, 2012

GoLocalWorcester accompanied state inspectors during a sting operation that resulted in two area barber shops getting fined for operating without a license. The Board of Registration of Barbers announced disciplinary action against two Worcester barber shops.

Final Decision and Order by Default, the Board has revoked Ada Taveras’ license to operate a barber shop in Massachusetts, and further assessed a $200 fine. The Board found that Taveras was operating without a current barber shop license and was employing an unlicensed individual at University Barber Shop located at 159 Millbury Street in Worcester.

By Final Decision and Order by Default, the Board assessed a fine of $100 on Jorge Flores for practicing as a barber without a license at Worcester’s Finest barbershop located at 8 Boylston Street in Worcester.

Several attempts were made to contact owners of both barber shops.

The Division of Professional Licensure, Director Mark Kmetz, said, “DPL inspectors visit barber shops and other facilities licensed by DPL boards every day, throughout the state, to check that the facilities are in compliance with the applicable rules and regulations. The inspections are unscheduled and announced, so that the inspector can see how the facility actually operates on a day-to-day basis.”

There are 54 licensed baber shops in Worcester

Barber professionals work closely with the public and are regulated by the Board of Registration of Barbers. The Board also sets the requirements and regulates the schools, which train candidates for this occupation. The Board currently licenses approximately 6,242 barbers, shops, instructors and schools in the Commonwealth.

Consumers are urged to visit the Division of Professional Licensure’s website  and select the “Check a Professional’s License” link to determine whether a professional with whom they may do business is licensed and in good standing.

The Division of Professional Licensure is a regulatory agency within the Office of Consumer Affairs and Business Regulation. The agency is responsible for ensuring regulatory compliance and the integrity of the licensing process for approximately 365,000 licensees in trades and professions under the jurisdiction of 31 boards of registration.

Tune into to GoLocalTV today at 4pm to hear from one of the inspectors to learn what they look out for during these inspections.
