Worcester to Host LGBTQ Training for Campus Police

Wednesday, February 18, 2015

The Worcester College Campus Police LGBTQ Liaison Consortium will hold its first training next week at Worcester State University. College campus officers will be trained to become better liaisons to the LGBTQ communities.

“Worcester has made great strides on human rights in the past year, and I’m proud our city liaisons are working to broaden that reach to our college campuses. Worcester is home to 35,000 college students, and we should do everything in our power to ensure their time in the city is a positive one," said City Manager Ed Augustus.

Trainers will include representatives from the Office of Attorney General, the Anti-Defamation League, and the Gay Officers Action League. The day will also include a community panel with members from Parents and Family of Lesbians and Gays, Safe Homes, and Worcester Pride.

Jayna Turchek, Worcester's Director of Human Rights and Disabilities, and Lieutenant Richard Bates from the Worcester Police Department will appointed last year as part of Augustus' plan to improve Worcester's record on equality and inclusiveness. The goal of the liaisons program was to have specific people within city government that members of the LGBTQ community could reach out to for services.

Lt. Bates met with police chiefs from Worcester's college campuses and other members of the Worcester Police Department to form a consortium of LGBTQ Liaisons.

The training begins on February 20 and is being facilitated by the WPD. The training will run from 8 AM to 4 PM.

Consortium members include Assumption College, Becker College, Clark University, College of the Holy Cross, Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Services, Quinsigamond Community College, Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Worcester State University, UMASS Lake Ave. Campus, UMASS Memorial Campus, and Anna Maria College.
