Finneran: Billionaire Toadies

Today’s story involves the NBA’s abject surrender to the thugs of Red China. Never forget however that the NFL and MLB---gougers of the first rank--- are equally complicit in their pursuit of the Benjamins and their abandonment of decency.
Today’s hero is Daryl Morey, at least for now the general manager of the Houston Rockets basketball franchise. In a tweet which he should never regret, he posted these words: “Fight for Freedom. Stand with Hong Kong.” Not exactly the equal of “Give me Liberty or give me Death!”, but nonetheless Morey’s tweet captured a moral moment.
Then the roof fell in. The NBA, indecently drooling over the “Chinese market” for its over-priced product, termed Morey’s tweet “regrettable”. Morey’s boss, Rockets’ owner Tilman Fertitta, smelling do-re-mi with the nose of a weasel and desperate to get his share of the money pot, tweeted out that Morey does not speak for the Rockets.
Needless to say, they were joined by other hucksters, these ones China-based and equally eager for the lucre. Tencent, a media company chasing a billion-dollar deal with the NBA, weighed in, voicing criticism of the offending tweet as well as of the Rockets. Not to be outdone in the boot-licking department, Li-Ning, an apparel company---meaning they sell cheap T-shirts---also weighed in.
Chinese State Television---how’s that for a chilling thought??? Chinese State Television is demanding apologies. Needless to say, they will receive such apologies for there is no one in the NBA crowd who would mimic Sam Adams or even Harry Truman in telling them to stick it in their ear.
Red China is a bully and a menace. There is no need to mince words here. They lie, they cheat, and they steal on a daily basis. They are horrific tyrants to their own people. They fulfill Orwell’s chilling phrase of imagining a vision of the future as “a boot stamping on a human face”. Seeing all this vicious criminality in real-time, the people of Hong Kong (and Taiwan) have every reason to be frightened.
Not so the NBA, not so. The NBA, as well as the amoral cash-crazy tech masters of Silicon Valley, have no excuse for their bowing and scraping and capitulating to China’s bosses. As noted, the moral surrender of these folks to state barbarism is all about the cash. Tiananmen Square is no excuse for them. They are perfectly content to have the ruling regime torment, torture, imprison, and kill its own citizens, as long as these “sportsmen” and business bosses get their cut.
Of course, having already plundered the city and state treasuries of America for their stadiums, the sportsmen now seek new fields to conquer. There is no apparent limit to their self-abasement.
Consider this example of groveling self-degredation: Givenchy, Versace, and Coach---all over-priced purveyors of needless crap---have been selling T-shirts which showed Taiwan and Hong Kong as countries separate from Red China. Now, after objection from the gangsters in Beijing, all three have meekly apologized and withdrawn those shirts.
Pitiful. Absolutely pitiful. Billionaire toadies.
For shame.
