British Prime Minister Boris Johnson is set to stay in power according to exit polls showed that his Conservative party is winning a majority of parliamentary seats in Thursday’s general election.

It is the party’s best performance since 1987 under Margaret Thatcher.

The vote is the first to be held in the winter months since 1974 and the first December election since 1923.

The Poll

The exit poll by Ipsos Mori projects that the Conservatives will win 368 seats in Parliament, a gain of 50 seats.

The opposing Labour Party is projected to lose 71 seats, leaving them with 191 seats overall.

About Johnson

Johnson has served as Prime Minister to the UK since July of 2019 and a supporter of Brexit.

According to CNBC, Johnson’s Brexit deal has been agreed to in principle by the U.K. Parliament, but has not yet been approved by lawmakers.

Prior to becoming Prime Minister, he served as a member of Parliament for Uxbridge and South Ruislip since 2015 and was MP for Henley from 2001 to 2008.

He also served as mayor of London from 2008 to 2016 and foreign secretary from 2016 to 2018. Johnson identifies as a one-nation conservative.
