NEW: Brown Will Not Participate in Tomorrow’s Senate Debate

Monday, October 29, 2012

The campaign for Republican Senator Scott Brown released a statement Monday afternoon saying that the he will not participate in tomorrow's fourth and final Senate debate against Democratic challenger Elizabeth Warren in light of Hurricane Sandy's battering of the Bay State and its impact on residents.

“The Scott Brown campaign today announced that out of concern for the hardship faced by people in the path of Hurricane Sandy that he will not be participating in tomorrow’s fourth and final debate," said Colin Reed, communications director for Brown.

"It is simply not appropriate to go forward with a political debate when a disaster strikes. The focus for all of us before, during and after the storm needs to be on emergency response and disaster relief, not campaigns and politics.”

The Warren campaign released a similar statement as well shortly after.

"Elizabeth believes the focus now must be on public safety and ensuring people get the help they need during the storm and in its aftermath," said Mindy Myers, campaign manager for Warren.

"With the concern for public safety and cleanup paramount, Elizabeth believes the debate should not be held tomorrow."

Both President Barack Obama and Republican candidate Mitt Romney have canceled their campaign events for Tuesday, as did Senate candidates in Pennsylvania and Virginia. The Maine Senate debate scheduled for tomorrow has been canceled as well.
