New: Senator Brown Helps Add 100 Volunteers to “Activate Worcester”

Senator Brown speaking to supporters at Activate Worcester event

In an effort to galvanize Worcester’s conservative base, a new PAC, aptly named “Activate Worcester”  launched on Saturday in a major kickoff event at Carrington Hall with many local conservative politicians speaking to the crowd including Senator Scott Brown. Close to 200 people joining in the upbeat festivities. The event focused on conservatives Republicans and Independents.

ACTIVATE WORCESTER is the brainchild of the GOP’s newly elected state committeewoman Bonnie Johnson. Chris Pinto, the Chairman of the PAC, said that this movement is designed to shake off the apathy of the voters in Worcester who were only able to garner 19.8% of all registered voters in last November's citywide election. Ms. Johnson’s feeling is that the more involved our electorate is, the better (and more responsive) representation we will receive from our elected officials. Ms. Johnson told the crowd, “If people simply cannot get to their assigned polling place, they should be taking full advantage of the absentee ballots that are readily available, giving a voice to all who choose to vote”.

The festivities began with a color guard from the North High Navy ROTC who led the throng in a recitation of the Pledge Of Allegiance. This was then followed by a number of speakers who were either elected officials, or those who are running for office.

Jen Caissie, Governor’s Council, was the first speaker. Jen spoke first and with pride of the relatively high level of awareness of the Governors’ Council, as well as the significantly increased accountability of members of the Council, including the mandate for them to be truthful. She is also proud of having been the swing vote in requiring that a “Victim’s Rights Advocate” be included on the parole board. This move was motivated by the murder of Woburn police officer John Maguire by Dominic Cinelli while robbing a Kohls department store. Cinelli, who was serving three life sentences, and was released from prison by Gov. Patrick’s Parole Board.

Donna Colorio, a newly elected member of the Worcester School Committee, told the gathering that she has kept her campaign pledge to visit all 44 schools in the city. This exposure will mean that “her eyes are wide open” when voting on issues that affect the schools. A relative newcomer to the political scene, she described how a few short years ago, she was a single mom with both a job as a college professor and a position with her families’ business. After being increasingly frustrated with things in Worcester (and in the country as a whole), she decided to get involved with the Scott Brown campaign. That involvement led to a successful run for the school committee. Her charge was for people in the audience to stop complaining and channel their frustrations into actions! The rest is history.

Bill McCarthy has thrown his hat into the ring to challenge Democrat State Representative Jim O’Day. Bill is a lifelong Worcester guy who, like many others, is fed up with the status quo. He vowed to work to protect taxpayers and feels that “spending is out of control” (an audience member cited the various irregularities with EBT cards as an example, which was greeted by many cheers). If elected, he vowed to “work hard” for his constituents.

Karyn Polito had the honor of introducing Senator Brown. She told the crowd that “We need everyone’s help to change the finances, moral fiber and character of the country”. Karyn went on to say that “People will vote for the right values and right message…regardless of party”. Scott Brown was proof of that. She then introduced Scott Brown, saying, “When he was elected, the right person was elected who energized the large statewide conservative base”.

Senator Scott Brown told the crowd that he felt that, as an electorate, “we deserve better” than what we have been experiencing. Starting with this comment and through out the speech the crowd reacted with enthusiastic applause to Senator Brown’s speech. Sen. Brown said that he was pleased to attend a ceremony two weeks ago in the Rose Garden where President Obama signed the “Insider Trading Bill” that he had sponsored. He said that in spite of the party differences, he always welcomes the opportunity to work with the President to get things done like the “Jobs 4 Vets” program which provides tax breaks for business that hire “our heroes”.

Regarding the upcoming election, Senator Brown felt that the difference was quite simple: Warren is a “social crusader”, while he is a “Jobs crusader”. Again, big cheers from the crowd! He also said that he feels that government should provide a safety net and not an entitlement, citing his own personal story, including moving 17 times in his first 18 years! Senator Brown commented that we are in an “economic emergency”, and emphasized the need for a balanced budget. He further mentioned that unlike many of his peers, he actually READS the bills before having judgment on their contents.

Before thanking the crowd for attending the event, he expressed his belief that we are all Americans first, and members of various parties and movements second, which delivered his highest level of applause during the afternoon.

When asked what he thought about Senator Brown’s speech, Paul Franco the newly elected Chairman of the Worcester Republican city committee, said, “It was inspiring. I can’t wait until the debates! Scott Brown is going to mop the floor with Lizzy Warren.”

All of the festivities were then concluded for the afternoon and the bottom line was that Worcester GOP through “Activate Worcester” has added well over 100 new volunteers and they are well on their way to being a force to be reckoned with now and in the future.

Kayla Berube, who runs Senator Brown’s Mass Victory office in Worcester left with a large list of people who signed up to help with the campaign. She spoke of the hard work that numerous college and high school aged young men have been doing in the Worcester office. One young man, who was at the event, is approaching one thousand calls made on behalf of the senator’s campaign.
