Who’s Hot and Who’s Not in Worcester?

Tuesday, April 14, 2015

Every Tuesday, GoLocal Worcester will examine who is rising and who is falling in Worcester politics, education, business and sports.

SEE SLIDES BELOW: Who's Hot and Who's Not in Worcester?

This week's Who's Hot and Who's Not in Worcester? identifies three professional sports teams, a restaurant, the top of Worcester's city government, the MBTA disaster, and a Worcester Police officer to name a few.

The one thing to remember is that this list could flip-flop by next Tuesday. It's in Worcester's hands.

Here's Who's Hot and Who's Not RIGHT NOW in Worcester:

City Manager Ed Augustus

Can Augustus do anything wrong? The city council was singing his praises last week before they voted unanimously to sell the former courthouse to Brady Sullivan Properties, LLC. The deal was put together by Augustus and he deserves most of the credit. The city now has the old courthouse off their hands, and can move forward.

Worcester County Sheriff Lew Evangelidis

Sheriff Evangelidis is everywhere. He's doing lots of great things for Worcester and Worcester County. Recently, he has agreed to provide inmates from Worcester's correctional facility to help out getting Little League fields in the city ready for Opening Day.

Boston Celtics

The C's are one win away from a playoff berth that no one in the world expected. This was supposed to be one of Boston's rebuilding years. Instead, they went out and acquired point guard Isaiah Thomas and launched themselves into the playoff race. The best part? They have Thomas for another three years. And TONS of draft picks.

Jennithan Cortes

With District 2 City Councilor Phil Palmieri making a run for an At-Large position, District 2 is suddenly up for grabs.

Cortes, who lost to Palmieri in 2013, is one of four candidates to pull nomination papers so far. However, Cortes is the only one with election experience and is already well-known in the city.

Mayor Joe Petty

Mayor Petty probably never imagined that his tenure as mayor would be defined by a principal at North High School. At last week's School Committee meeting, Petty failed to address the elephant in the room adequately enough and was blasted by Worcester Teachers Union president Lenny Zalauskus. Petty also denied to divulge information regarding North High's cameras when requested by School Committee member Dianna Biancheria. According to Petty, the cameras are a "security issue," and he wasn't allowed to talk about it.

MBTA

What a mess. A recent report indicated that the MBTA wasn't spending enough money to keep the commuter rail's infrastructure sound. The state had to endure the most snow in years just to see how bad things were. Let's not forget what Worcester commuters had to deal with: MBTA Shut Down 24 Trains on Worcester Line.

Officer Michael Motyka

As if there wasn't enough racial unrest in this city. Last week, the Worcester Police had to arrest one of their own, Michael Motyka, for assaulting a 48-year-old man while the man was handcuffed in a holding cell. To top it off, Motyka called the man a racial slur.

Boston Bruins

The Boston Bruins - how far we have fallen. There's nothing like winning five games in a row and looking like a viable playoff threat - and then suddenly losing the last three games in embarassing form and playing your way out of the playoffs. Thanks, Claude.

Worcester Sharks

The Bruins might be rubbing off on the Worcester Sharks. The Sharks won seven in a row...and then dropped four out of their next five games.

The Sharks have three games left in the regular season (Friday, Saturday and Sunday). They only need to win one more game to get into the playoffs.

In case you haven't been following, if the Sharks lose all three games, this will be the last week they will be called the Worcester Sharks. It's San Jose Barracuda from here on out.
