Deer Tick Talks

Friday, July 08, 2011

Deer Tick, Providence’s indie darling band, played familiar territory for one of WBRU’s free Summer Concert Series shows at Lupo's Friday.  Known for their stimulating and often stirring combination of American folk revival and hard-rocking energy, the band is perhaps most popular for their infatuation with cover songs—everything from the Sex Pistols, traditional Mexican, Sean Kingston, and Hank Williams.

The LOOK: Your First Hair Color

Friday, July 08, 2011

This week while working with color clients behind the chair, I was lucky to work on some first-timers when it came to color. I couldn't help but to play something for the occasion: a style icon herself singing out like a virgin... Right then and there, I decided it would be fitting to fill you in on being colored for the very first time.

Good is Good: Horndog Politicians

Thursday, July 07, 2011

Are we to blame for all the horndog male politicians? For months now, I’ve been carrying the mantle for the good men falsely accused of being bad. I still believe that we focus far too much energy on celebrity misdeeds and not enough on the more pressing and nuanced issues of modern manhood. But the events of the last few weeks have forced me to rethink one type of man often caught by scandal: the politician.

URI Announces New Grad Programs in Neurosciences

Thursday, July 07, 2011

Imagine a network with a trillion phones and imagine that each phone can make or receive 2,000 calls at the same time. Now multiply those transactions by another trillion. It's either the craziest phone bank ever, or a perfect metaphor for the complexity and vast processing power of the human brain and its neurons. And now, the University of Rhode Island has joined the global quest to understand the most remarkable human organ by launching new graduate programs in neurosciences.

High School Reunions: Finding Former Classmates in the Digital Age

Wednesday, July 06, 2011

Dan's mother died recently. It was a sad day for him and his family, but a good day for the committee trying to put together East Greenwich High School's Class of 1971's 40th reunion this summer. That's because the obituary I read told me where Dan was now living, and I was able to mention the upcoming reunion to him in the condolence card I sent him via snail mail.
