2010 Red Sox: One Step Forward, Two Steps Back
Monday, May 17, 2010
Just when you thought that the Boston Red Sox may have finally figured it out, they lose two straight in Detroit and find themselves 7 ½ games out of first in the American League East. Boston followed up a heart-breaking extra inning loss Saturday night with a lifeless performance Sunday falling 5-1 at Comerica Park.
While the Boston offense managed only one run on seven hits on Sunday, we have learned through the first 38 games of the season that Theo Epstein’s team that was built for “run prevention” is just a façade.
The Red Sox are one of only four major league teams to give up more than 200 runs thus far this season. Their team ERA is 4.81 which ranks them 26th out of 30 teams in all of Major League Baseball.
Meanwhile, the offense has been more productive than many thought it was capable of, particularly without leadoff hitter Jacoby Ellsbury. Boston is 2nd overall in homeruns (49), 5th in runs scored (193), 6thin RBI’s (186) and 9thin batting average (.269).
The question is: when will the pitching perform up to expectation? John Lackey had another subpar performance Sunday (7 IP 9 H 5 ER 4 BB 4 K). Josh Beckett has been atroscious. And the bullpen has been inconsistent.
Thank goodness we still have the Celtics playing meaningful games this late in the spring because this has the makings of a long and frustrating summer for New England sports fans once baseball takes center stage.
