Insult to Injury for Alex Cora, Already Fired Now Suspended - Red Sox Penalized Too
Wednesday, April 22, 2020
The Red Sox will lose their second-round pick in the 2020 draft and one staffer has been sanctioned.
Major League Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred determined that they had cheated in 2018 but that their conduct was “far more limited in scope and impact” than that of the 2017 Houston Astros.
According to MLB, Manfred has disciplined only one person involved in the Red Sox sign stealing.
Low-level staffer J.T. Watkins, the team’s video replay operator, has been suspended without pay for this season and forbidden to run the replay room in 2021. This season is presently closed down due to the coronavirus crisis. California Governor Gavin Newsome has warned that it is highly unlikely professional sports will re-open with crowds this summer.
Manfred also suspended Alex Cora, who managed the Red Sox to the World Series title in 2018 and coached for Houston before that, for a year for his role in the Astros’ cheating — but the commissioner did not punish Cora for anything related to the Red Sox.
Boston fired Cora in January.
