Algonquin Wins Central Division I Girls Lacrosse Title

Wednesday, June 12, 2013

Hannah Lindgren scored four goals for Algonquin in a winning effort.

For the second straight year, the Algonquin girls lacrosse team has won the Central Division I lacrosse title, defeating Shrewsbury by a score of 18-9 on Saturday.

The Tomahawks were led by senior captain Hannah Lindgren, who netted a team-high four goals in the game, while junior Melanie Wagner added three in Algonquin's winning effort. Lindgren and Wagner have been two of the Tomahawks' offensive leaders all season, as Lindgren, who will be heading to Bentley University next year, compiled 60 goals and 80 points, while Wagner scored 25 goals on the season and totaled 43 points.

Lindgren got the Tomahawks on the board first in the first quarter, giving Algonquin an early 1-0 lead. Shrewsbury answered right back to tie the game 1-1, but that's as close as they would get, as Algonquin scored four straight to close out the first quarter, taking a 5-1 lead. The Tomahawks continued its strong play into the second quarter, taking a 10-4 lead into the half.

Shrewsbury came out strong in the second half, netting the first goal to cut its deficit to 10-5. However, Algonquin rattled off the next three goals of the half, giving themselves a 13-5 lead and putting the game out of reach for Shrewsbury.

Balanced attack

Algonquin had a balanced scoring attack in the game, getting two goals apiece from senior Sara Euler, and sophomores Jacklyn Healy and Stephanie McGovern. Senior captain and defenseman, Taylor O'Connell, who will play at the University of Loyola in Maryland next year, even chipped in with a goal for the Tomahawks. Shrewsbury was led by Devan Michael, who netted four goals. Michael finished second in Central Mass in scoring this season with 108 points.

Algonquin will now advance to the Division I girls lacrosse state tournament.
