Auburn Native Tyler Beede Selected in 1st Round of MLB Draft

Saturday, June 07, 2014

Auburn native and Vanderbilt star pitcher Tyler Beede was selected by the San Francisco Giants with the 14th overall pick in the 2014 MLB Draft.

a graduate of Lawrence Academy, Beede is the 18th player in history to be selected in the 1st round of 2 different drafts.  He was a first round pick of the Toronto Blue Jays in 2011, but decided to go to Vanderbilt instead of turning pro at that point.

College Ace

Beede had an 8-7 record and a 3.20 ERA this past season as a junior for the Commodores.  The 6’4” 215 pounder was even better last year as a sophomore, earning All-American honors and setting a school record with 14 wins.

Vanderbilt is currently slated to face Stanford in the Super Regional round of the College World Series.

Show Him the Money

Last year’s 14th overall pick, high school catcher Reese McGuire, signed for $2.37 million.  Beede declined a $2.5 million signing bonus from the Blue Jays after they selected him 21st overall out of high school in 2011.

Beede has the option of returning to school for his final year of eligibility next season if he declines to sign with the Giants.
