St. John's remains favorite
St. John's comes in as the favorite to win the whole tournament, posting a league-best 15-3 record on the year. The Pioneers made it to the semifinals with a 12-7 victory over upset-minded Westborough High School in the quarterfinals, before knocking off two-time defending district champion Algonquin High School in the semifinals. St. John's has plenty of offensive firepower, with three scorers in the top 10 in all of Central Mass in scoring. Drew Smiley is fourth in Central Mass with 76 points, while Hunter Burdick and Josh Freilich are tied for tenth with 64 points apiece.
Burdick and Smiley led the attack in the Pioneers' 8-6 victory over the Tomahawks, scoring two goals and dishing out one assist apiece in a back-and-forth game at Foley Stadium.
Grafton continues to impress
Grafton was considered to be the favorite to knock off St. John's in a potential championship match up, and now they'll have their opportunity. Grafton powered its way to the semifinals with a convincing 16-7 triumph over Groton-Dunstable in the quarterfinals, before slipping past third-seeded Shrewsbury 7-3 in the semifinals. Tyler Reilly, who is second in Central Mass in scoring, compiling 51 goals and 97 points this season, will lead the offensive charge for Grafton against St. John's. Bryan Rotatori will be assisting in the offensive charge, compiling 74 points on the season, which is good for sixth in Central Mass.
In Grafton's 7-3 victory over Shrewsbury, Reilly was shadowed all game and was held off the board. Luckily, seniors Sawyer Coleman and Mike Schena stepped up for the Indians, scoring two goals apiece to give Grafton a lift.
Grafton will now look to make the most of its opportunity in the final this weekend, after losing in the finals to Algonquin a year ago.
