UPDATE Former Friars Coach Tim Welsh RESIGNS

Monday, May 03, 2010

UPDATED: Former Providence College men’s basketball coach Tim Welsh was arrested on misdemeanor DWI charges early Friday morning in Levittown, NY.    Now, just three days later he has resigned from his post without ever coaching a game.  Welsh was found sleeping at the wheel of his 2006 Lexus while at a green light.

Welsh’s blood alcohol level was a .18 which is more than twice the legal limit of .08.  The 49-year old entered a not guilty plea at his arraignment in Hempstead on Friday.

Welsh was hired by Hofstra one month ago to coach their men’s basketball program after a 2-year hiatus from coaching.  He coached the Friars from 1998-2008.  Hofstra has suspended him without pay pending their own investigation of the matter.  Hofstra will begin a search for a new men's coach immediately.
