LeBron JaMEs, Ray Allen and the Red Sox

Egomaniac SPorts Network:

So it has all come down to this - a nationally televised show at 9pm tonight on ESPN where King James decides which city and franchise he will grace with his presence for the foreseeable future.  Sickening, isn’t it?

LeBron and his people will have you believe that this is about generating money for the Boys and Girls Clubs of America.  But who are they kidding?  This is all about LeBron – a man who craves the spotlight.  He may be a great teammate, but the message he is sending with this one hour special is that he’s more concerned with his own self promotion than he is about winning championships.  It’s actually sad when you think about it.

Given that his press conference will take place in Greenwich, Connecticut, speculation is that James may choose the Knicks given the proximity to New York.  Before that, the late favorite seemed to be Cleveland keeping him home with Miami running second.  We have heard very little about Chicago.

So where will he end up?  Who knows?  But he is making it easier for many fans to root against him given the way he and his people have handled this whole situation.

Ray-united:

Reports late last night had Ray Allen and the Boston Celtics agreeing to a new 2-year deal worth 20 million dollars total.  The second year is reportedly a player option.  This means that the window for the “Big 3” has been extended for another two years.  Kevin Garnett has 2 years remaining on his contract while Paul Pierce just inked a new 4-year deal.

It is probably safe to assume that it will be tough for this crew to duplicate its success from this past season given that they will all be a year older when the next season rolls around.

However, if you are an optimist, maybe KG’s knee gets even stronger with another offseason of rest.  And maybe Doc Rivers learned from last season and will play his aging stars sparingly during the regular season choosing to save their energy for another strong playoff run.

Whatever the case may be, the 2010-2011 Boston Celtics will be relevant.  If Rajon Rondo continues his dramatic improvement and Kendrick Perkins is healthy for a second half of the season return, who knows what this team might be able to accomplish.  If this past season taught us anything, it’s that we shouldn’t count out a group of guys who have the hearts and the make-up of a champion.

Reeling Red Sox:

After last night’s 6-4 loss in Tampa, the surprise shouldn’t be in Boston’s four game losing streak but rather how they were able to win so many games with no-name players playing significant innings.

Getting swept in Tampa hurt because it has given life to the once reeling Rays.  Winners of five in a row, Tampa Bay is now 2 ½  games ahead of Boston in the American League Wild Card race.

The loss that stings most is the game 1 loss to Tampa where Boston squandered a 5-1 lead against Matt Garza and the Rays.  It was all downhill from there.

Now the Sox take today off before heading to Toronto for a weekend series leading into the All-Star break.  They need to grab at least 1 of 3 to slow the bleeding.  2 of 3 or, better yet, a sweep would stop the bleeding heading into the break.
