Patriots:  Matt Light to re-sign with team

Monday, August 01, 2011

It may be the most important free agent pick-up the Patriots make this year.

According to the Boston Globe, Patriots offensive tackle Matt Light will be staying with the team, as late Sunday night he agreed to terms on a new two-year contract.  Financial details of the deal were not immediately known.

The 33-year-old Light was an unrestricted free agent, and when the Patriots drafted offensive lineman Nate Solder out of Colorado this past April, it appeared unlikely Light would remain in the Patriots' plans for the future.  As Solder is still not signed however, the liklihood of his coming in and picking up a starting spot on the offensive line becomes more remote with each passing day.

Light was drafted by the Patriots in the 2001 NFL Draft out of Purdue, started 12 games in his first season and has not looked back since.  This past year, he started 16 games at left tackle, and was named to the Pro Bowl for the third time in his career.  He also serves as the Patriots' team representative to the NFL Players Association.
