Scott Cordischi On Sports: Pats Will Make Out On Brady Deal

Wednesday, September 08, 2010

If you believe in the old adage, “where there’s smoke, there’s fire,” then Patriots QB Tom Brady should have a new contract extension finalized sometime soon.  Published reports say that Brady and the Pats are close to agreeing on a 3-year extension worth about 58 million dollars which would keep him in New England through the 2013 season.

If these reports turn out to be accurate, you would have to say that the Patriots make out on this deal.  Brady is 33 and has talked about wanting to play to age 40.  Given that, and the fact the Peyton Manning is in the last year of a 6-year deal worth 98 million dollars, many thought that Brady would be looking for a deal in the 5-6 year range worth somewhere between 100-120 million dollars.  Now the Patriots can reevaluate in a few years how they feel about keeping Brady around when he will clearly be nearing the end of his career.  Score one for Bob Kraft.

-Did anyone really think that US Ryder Cup captain Corey Pavin wouldn’t pick Tiger Woods to be on his team?

-Tiger had better be prepared for what could be some heckling from the European fans over in the U.K. when the Ryder Cup is played in a few weeks.

-As a long-time voter for the Heisman Trophy, I understand the decision to strip Reggie Bush of his 2005 Heisman given the fact that he violated NCAA rules.  However, I disagree with the decision to leave the spot vacant and would present it to runner-up Vince Young who had an outstanding year for Texas that season.

-Randy Moss’ comments about not feeling wanted by the Patriots are just another example of a professional athlete posturing for a new contract.

-This Red Sox/Rays series at Fenway is much ado about nothing.  And that would be the case even if they were to sweep Tampa.

-21 year-old European Ryder Cup team member Rory McElroy says he would like to play against Tiger in this year’s event.  Be careful what you wish for, Rory.

-If I were captains Corey Pavin and Colin Montgomerie, I would pit American Ricky Fowler against McElroy in the singles matches in a battle of 21 year-old young guns.

-Deutsche Bank Championship winner Charlie Hoffman looks like he belongs on a surf board more than he does a golf course.

-I know a lot of Red Sox fans laughed at Manny’s apology for the things he did here in Boston including engineering his own departure.  I say, better late than never!

-How can’t any college football fan root for Boise State?

-Speaking of college football, just 17 days until that Brown-Harvard game under the lights at Brown Stadium!

-Is there anyone these days that isn’t in a fantasy football league?

-Of David Ortiz, Victor Martinez and Adrian Beltre, Beltre is clearly the one player I would want to re-sign over the other two.

-That’s Adrian Bel-TRAY according to ESPN’s Johnny Miller.

-A word of advice to those of you who like to wager a penny or two on NFL games, take the over in all Patriots games.  They look like a team who should be able to score a ton of points on offense and give up a ton on defense.
