Trash-Talkin’ Jets Reap What They Sow
Friday, January 14, 2011
“Patriots fans need lighten up regarding Rex Ryan’s playful ribbing. Your buttholes are tighter than Belichick’s hoodie.” Those are the comments of my esteemed colleague, an insufferable New York sports fan, Michael Parente.
I must say that I agree with him on two things. First, I find Ryan’s daily diatribe quite amusing. It makes for a much more interesting week leading up to the game than it otherwise would be if Ryan were stoic like his counterpart Bill Belichick.
I also have no problem with Ryan or his players talking smack if that’s what they want to do. If that’s how they feel and they are simply being true to themselves by expressing themselves in that manner, more power to them.
However, here is what I do have a problem with. Jet players and fans can’t have it both ways.
For the past few days, Antonio Cromartie has led the parade of Brady bashers calling the Patriots quarterback something that isn’t fit for print in this column. If you’re wondering what that is, let’s just say that it rhymes with mass-toll but has nothing to do with EZPass or the Mass Turnpike.
Many people, including NY Post columnist Steve Serby, think that Cromartie went overboard with his insult of Brady. I happen to agree. But here’s my big problem with Cromartie, the Jets and their fans when it comes to this trash talking stuff.
Clearly Ryan and the Jets love to talk the talk. Again, if that’s their preference, fine. What they need to do, however, is walk the walk.
Apparently Cromartie’s disdain for Brady has to do with him pointing his finger at the Jets sideline and taunting them after he led the Patriots on what seemed like 50 touchdown drives against their alleged great defense back in week 13. Cromartie’s take is that Brady is an “a—hole” for doing that.
Earth to Antonio! If you, your teammates, your head coach and your fans are going to talk smack all week long leading up to the game, you had better back it up with a victory. If you don’t, expect to have it thrown back in your face by Tom Brady, the Patriots or whatever team you are playing that week.
It’s like the Jets and their fans want to be able to call out their opponents every week leading up to the game and not be criticized when they lose. Sorry! It doesn’t work that way.
Even teams that exercise humility each week are subjected to criticism during or after a loss, much less a group of loudmouth blowhards like the Jets.
LaDanian Tomlinson whined about this same thing a few years ago when the Pats celebrated on the Chargers’ logo at midfield following a playoff win in San Diego. Sorry LT! Your former teammate Shawn Merriman was about as obnoxious as they come with his “lights out” dance in game. So when the Patriots made it “lights out” on your season, why shouldn’t they have celebrated on your turf mimicking your obnoxious teammate?
You see most NFL teams, including the Patriots, prefer to do their talking on Sunday’s, not Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday like the New York Jets.
After putting up with the verbal shots Tom Brady has received this week, you can be damn sure that I would be pointing at the Jets sidelines, at Ryan, at Cromartie, his 9 children, Fireman Ed, and anyone wearing anything remotely resembling a shade of green after throwing a touchdown pass too!
So whine all that you want Antonio Cromartie, Mike Parente or anyone else who either supports the Jets or hates the Patriots. You reap what you sow. Now deal with it!
