UConn Handles PC 75-57

Monday, February 14, 2011

The Providence Friars entered Sunday night’s game at UConn having won 3 of their last 4 games against the Huskies. 9th-ranked UConn also entered the game having lost 3 of their last 4 in the Big East. Unfortunately for the Friars, the Huskies found their swagger and beat PC 75-57.

It was a closely contested in the first half with the Huskies taking a 33-30 lead into the break. Just over 5 minutes into the second half it was tied at 41 when UConn went on their first big run. A 9-0 run by the Huskies put them up 50-41 putting the Friars in a hole they could never seem to climb out of.

UConn upped its lead to 12 before the Friars pulled to within 7 with 6:25 to go. But a 15-5 run to close the game gave the Huskies the 18-point win.

Marshon Brooks led the Friars once again with 25 points and 7 rebounds. Brooks, however, shot just 7-22 from the field and 1-8 from three. Bryce Cotton was the only other Friar in double figures with 10 points.

Vincent Council had his worst offensive game of the year shooting 0-7 from the field, 0-2 from three and 0-4 from the free throw line to finish with 0 points. Council did dish out 9 assists.

Jamal Coombs-McDaniel led the Huskies with 25 points and 8 rebounds. Kemba Walker had one of his better shooting nights of late going 7-10 from the field on his way to a 22-point, 7-assist, 6-rebound performance.

The win lifts UConn to (19-4) overall and (7-5) in the Big East which is tied for fifth.

The Friars fall to (14-11) on the season and (3-9) in the Big East. Providence is in 14th place in the conference standings.

Next up for PC is a match-up with last place DePaul at the Dunk Thursday night at 9pm. The Blue Demons are (6-18) on the season and (0-12) in the Big East.
