What To Watch For: Patriots vs. Lions
Saturday, November 22, 2014
The matchup go far deeper than just those two, however. Defensive battles, offensive mismatch and one-on-one action will highlight a game between two great teams. Here are three of those matchups to watch.
1. Darrelle Revis vs. Calvin Johnson
This could be the premier matchup of the season. Arguable the best cornerback in the NFL against arguably the best wide receiver. While Johnson’s distinct size advantage (6-5 vs 5-11) is generally an immediate advantage, Revis’ physicality and pure ability neutralize the advantage.
While Revis will likely not take Johnson completely out of the game, he has the ability to make Johnson a non-factor. Johnson, however, is also plenty skilled and could take the top off the Patriots defense. This is a fun one to watch, Patriots fans. Do not miss this matchup!
2. Patriots Offensive Line vs. Lions Defensive Line
The Patriots have historically struggled with teams that can get pressure with their front-four. The Detroit Lions have a defensive line that features three former 1st round draft picks (when healthy). With Ndamukong Suh and Ezekiel Ansah (Nick Fairley has been ruled out with a knee injury), the Patriots offensive line face a huge challenge.
The trio of Dan Connolly, Bryan Stork and Ryan Wendell have solidified the group, allowing Nate Solder and Sebastian Vollmer to play with less worries on the outside. The Patriots will be without Cameron Fleming, a rookie who has played a big role as a sixth lineman/blocking tight end. This could loom large if Suh and Ansah give the Patriots line troubles.
3. Rob Gronkowski vs. James Ihedigbo
For the second consecutive week Rob Gronkowski will be going against a former Patriots safety. This week, he gets James Ihedigbo. Ihedigbo’s strong-suit has never been coverage, which means Gronkowski could run free again.
Gronkowski is fully healthy for the first time in a long time, and he is taking it out on opposing safety’s. Expect Gronkowski to be close to 100 yards and get at least one touchdown.
