The LOOK: Big City Hair and How to Get It

Thursday, December 02, 2010

He was the lead hair stylist on Sex and the City 2, he made Anne Hathaway fabulous on film, and now he's GoLocalProv's weekly style expert. Introducing Frank Barbosa, Newport-based celebrity stylist who brings red carpet perspective to hair, makeup, and overall style.

I spent last week styling the tresses of New York models and beauty editors for a press event, and it was the perfect peek at what the big city fashionistas are sporting this holiday season.

The answer? Big, full hair with lots of volume. Think Charleze in those J'Adore Dior ads and you're there.

So, along with all the high boots, military coats, and oversized scarves, I felt like I was on the set of some fabulous stylized extravaganza. Big City, Big Hair.

Here's some easy tips to do it yourself.

1. Get yourself some excellent volumizing foam... I love Rene Furterer. Apply to your roots, then spray your hair with their thickening fluid, which swells the cuticle of each hair. (Just picture Botox for the fine-hair girl.)
2. For lifting your hair, go for Ojon thickening spray, then finish with Ojon volumizing finisher.
3. Now to finish it all off grab your hot tool or flat iron and seal your ends. The end result? Plumped-up, sexy hair!

You can find these amazing products at Frank Antonio Hair and Makeup, Newport, as well as Sephora at Providence Place Mall. You'll wonder how you got by so long without these magic potions.

From Sex and the City 2 to Rachel Getting Married, from The Sorcerer's Apprentice to Bride Wars, Frank Barbosa has styled some of the biggest celebrities in film, TV, and theater. He's been in the industry for 17 years, moving from hip neighborhoods in Chicago, to Boston's Newbury St, to Bellevue Avenue in Newport. He maintains that his real passion, though, is being behind a salon chair.
