The LOOK: Styling Dos and Don’ts

Friday, August 19, 2011

He was the lead hair stylist on Sex and the City 2, he made Anne Hathaway fabulous on film, and he's GoLocalProv's weekly style expert. Frank Barbosa, the Newport-based celebrity stylist, brings red carpet perspective to hair, makeup, and overall style.

While working on one of my more insightful clients (another Rhode Island business owner), she mentioned to me that she views her hair as an accessory she can't remove! And yet, she continued, it must always fit with what her look is at the moment.

That got me thinking... how to accessorize you hair to fit your wardrobe? Here are some dos and don'ts.

Do
Accessorize to your body shape. If you're tall and lean, wear it stick straight, like Blake Lively does here so beautifully. If you're average height and weight, go for wave and body.

Don't
Accessorize to look overdone or underdone.
Remember to check your look in a full-length mirror to make sure your look is blending right from head to toe.

Do
Remember that classic hair and makeup go with most everything.
Take a look at Vogue, Bazaar, or any fashion mag; they'll lead you in the right direction.

Don't
Be a trend slave.
Trendy hair and makeup can be all wrong with your wardrobe. Example: business attire with a Snooky bump is going to be all wrong unless you're going for the Sarah Palin look.

Where not to look for guidance: Hello and other gossip mags are not good hair and makeup reference guides, seeing as celebs are snapped by the paparazzi, generally at their worst.

Another place not to look: Reality TV: The Jersey Shore, the Kardashians, and need I say, Real (DESPERATE) Housewives!

Above all
Remember this is an outline. If you're receiving compliments on your look, you're doing something right! If the compliments drop off, think about a new shade of lipstick, or maybe a shift in your hair tone.

And always, have fun! -x

From Sex and the City 2 to Rachel Getting Married, from The Sorcerer's Apprentice to Bride Wars, Frank Barbosa has styled some of the biggest celebrities in film, TV, and theater. He's just finished styling on location alongside film stylist Alan D'Angerio on the film, The Odd Life of Timothy Green, starring Jennifer Garner. He's been in the industry for 17 years, moving from hip neighborhoods in Chicago, to Boston's Newbury St, to Bellevue Avenue in Newport. He maintains that his real passion, though, is being behind a salon chair at Frank Antonio Hair and Makeup in Newport.
