Women & Infants Named Center of Excellence for Reproductive Resources

Saturday, June 18, 2011

Women & Infants Hospital of Rhode Island has been named a Center of Excellence for Reproductive Resource Services by OptumHealth, an independent audit company.  According to OptumHealth, not all health care providers are created equal.  For complex medical conditions, the disparity is especially high.  Through a rigorous evaluation process, OptumHealth developed Centers of Excellence networks that provide access to clinically superior, cost effective health care.

“At our Center for Reproduction and Infertility, we provide advanced, specialized care with a contemporary approach to women’s health care,” said Sandra Ann Carson, MD, director of the Center for Reproduction and Infertility and professor of obstetrics and gynecology at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University.  “Being selected as a Center of Excellence for Reproductive Health Resources is certainly a testament to the expertise of all of our physicians and staff.”

OptumHealth has been identifying health care providers experienced in treating costly, complex and catastrophic medical conditions for more than 20 years.  Each year, they conduct a rigorous evaluation process of medical centers across the country, inviting only the most experienced and statistically successful health care providers to be part of the Centers of Excellence networks.

Each medical center is evaluated annually.  General measures include:

  • Volumes and outcomes of procedures
  • Demonstration of best-practice medicine
  • Program team and team stability
  • Quality of relationships with referring physicians and payers
  • Clinical research and results
  • Program depth and breadth
  • Treatment planning and coordination
  • Quality of patient/family-oriented services
  • Proof of a multidisciplinary approach to health care

Women & Infants’ Center for Reproduction and Infertility is affiliated with The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University and Tufts Medical Center.  The staff provides a comprehensive approach for both male and female infertility patients with a team that includes reproductive endocrinologists, nurses, social workers, and other providers, working along with specialists in male infertility, as needed.  Specialized genetic services and consultation are also provided.  For more information, go to www.womenandinfants.org/infertility or call 453-7300.
