10 Holiday Events for the Naughty and Nice

Saturday, December 10, 2011

No matter how you've been this year, we've got the perfect holiday events for you.

With the holidays upon us, everyone’s looking for the best way to celebrate. Sometimes you want a wholesome evening with the family and sometimes you just want to let loose.  Here are some holiday events for both sides of the spectrum, five for the angels and five for those who don’t mind a bit of coal in their stockings.

NAUGHTY

Narragansett Beer knows that cover bands and beer go together like Santa and cookies. That’s why they’re throwing a Holly Jolly Holiday Party and Cabaret on Friday, December 16 at The Ruins at the Coliseum in Providence. The bands playing are all local (of course): Foo Fighters cover band The Colour and the Shape, Weezer tribute band The Blue Album, and rock band Northern Lands.  There’s also going to be a special cabaret performance by Providence Pinup and Gansett Girls from their 2012 calendar (being released that night). And for only $5, it’s a great way to kick off your night and drink your part. 180 Pine St, Providence.

Naughty: Narragansett Beer's Holly Jolly Holiday Party

We had to include this one, if only because of the name. It’s the Dirty Deeds Christmas Party at The Beach House in Portsmouth. Dirty Deeds is New England’s own AC/DC tribute band, and they’re driving down the highway to hell to come put on an electrifying show on Saturday, December 17. Openers The Rock Kings go on at 8, and the place stays open for food and drink until 1 AM. Come down to party for the holidays and shake it all night long. 506 Park Ave, Portsmouth, 293-5700.

RiRa Irish Pub is holding an event combining naughty and nice on December 17. To get in and drink like the Irish you have to bring in an unwrapped toy to donate to the Marine Corps’ Toys for Tots program. But after you do your part to help out for the holidays, it’s $3 pints of Heineken and Amstel all night long. So you can feel good about yourself before engaging in some “good” old holiday debauchery. 50 Exchange Terrace, Providence, 272-1953.

This Claus doesn’t care if you’re naughty or nice. He’s Ant’ny Claus, also known as comedian Frank O’Donnell. Ant’ny is Santa’s younger, lesser-known brother who always ends up doing his brother’s dirty work, and he isn’t happy about it. He’s performing his Christmas Spectacular show at Catch a Rising Star Comedy Club (where O‘Donnell is the house comic) in Lincoln on Wednesday, December 21. It’s sure to be raunchy, seasonal, and of course, funny. 100 Twin River Road, Lincoln, 877-827-4837.

Two different Christmas parties a week a part give you plenty of chances to get down with your bad self, holiday style. First on December 17, Suite 600 in Lincoln is throwing its annual Christmas party with complimentary buffet, no cover, and music and music videos provided by DJ DTrain. And then on Christmas night (December 25), Harbourside Lobstermania in East Greenwich is holding its own party. With drink specials, music, and dancing all night (well, until 1 AM at least), this waterfront locale is going to have the best not-so-silent night around. Suite 600, 600 George Washington Highway, Lincoln, 334-0800. Harbourside, 38 Water St, East Greenwich, 884-6363.

NICE

The Newport Mansions offer attractions for adults and children alike. The Breakers, The Elms, and Marble House are decked out in traditional holiday plants and ornaments, and there are special events at the opulent homes all month. Among them are visits with Santa every Sunday, live holiday music, and a holiday dinner dance. Plus there’s a nativity scene in Marble House and a dramatic reading of A Christmas Carol on December 15 at Blithewold

Nice: Santa's workshops and visits in Newport and Pawtucket

Mansion. 847-1000.

If you don’t have plans yet for today, try to make it over to Slater Mill in Pawtucket for an afternoon in Santa’s workshop with the kids. From 10-4, come to the historic site to make your own ornaments, tour the Slater Hill Museum, and enjoy light refreshments in the decorated Sylvanus Brown house. You can also visit the Wilkinson Mill Machine Shop where the elves of the mill have been working hard making presents for the good girls and boys. Slater Mill, 67 Roosevelt Ave, Pawtucket, 725-8638.

Instead of suffering through out-of-tune carolers, go see the Jamestown Community Chorus singing ten of the best-known choruses from Handel's Messiah in their Holiday Concert. They'll perform these portions from the traditional Christmas work in the afternoon of Sunday, December 11, accompanied by a special chamber orchestra. They'll also be singing some familiar carols from the Oxford Book of Carols. This is a popular event, so make sure you call to make reservations. Jamestown Community Center - 41 Conanicus Avenue, Jamestown, 423-1574.

Lippitt House in Providence is having a free Family Holiday Open House on Sunday December 18, best for kids under 10. At 3:15 they're screening the animated classic The Snowman by Raymond Briggs. Then there are craft activities and snacks for everyone to enjoy in the beautifully decorated historic home. 3-5 PM, Governor Henry Lippitt House Museum, 199 Hope Street, Providence, 453-0688. Preserve RI

Newport History Tours has a special way for you to see Newport and learn about the town's holiday traditions. The Holiday Lantern Tours are given at 4:30 PM on Fridays and Saturdays through December 23. You'll be taken by lamp-light around the streets of Newport while your guides from the Newport Historical Society teach you about the colonial Newporters celebrated (or didn't) the holidays.  And later, in the 1697 Wanton-Lyman-Hazard House, they’ll talk about how approaches to holiday decorations and fesitivites have changed over the years. Newport is beautiful by day, but even better in the winter at night. The Museum and Shop at Brick Market, 127 Thames Street, Newport, 841-8770.  Newport History Tours

For more holiday coverage all month long, don't miss GoLocalTV fresh every day at 4pm and on demand 24/7, here.
