Thursday, December 02, 2010
Lifestyle expert Candita Clayton shares straight talk on holiday candles... and where to find locally made products that are high quality and better for the environment.
Candita recommends...
Orla Soy Candles, a division of North Star Music in North Kingstown, and Ocean Bay Candle Company, based in Johnston, for locally made, high-quality soy candles that burn clean and support local business. Both are available online and in selected retailers in RI.
And don't forget these tips for scented candles:
-
Burn your highly scented soy wax candles on a heat resistant surface
-
Discontinue use of candle when ½” of wax remains at the bottom of the container
-
Never burn candles unattended (it is easy to forget that you have one burning)
-
Keep away from where pets may cross and out of reach of children
-
Burn your candle for at least 3 hours each burn or until the pool of melted wax is even across the container. This promotes an even, clean burn each time you light the candle.
-
Don’t use the lid to extinguish the candle. Instead, use the ends of scissors or a wick dipper to bend the wick into the pool of wax to extinguish the flame. This little trick also reduces the smoking of the wick and extends the burn time of the candle
-
To avoid smoking or soot:
-
Always keep your wicks trimmed to ¼”
-
Burn candles away from drafts
-
Keep debris out of and away from candle, as this is also a fire hazard
-
Do not let your flame get higher than ¾”. At that point, extinguish the candle, let it cool, trim the wick and relight
