Auburn Chamber Sponsors Town-Wide Clean-Up Day May 4

Friday, April 19, 2013

Save the date for a town-side clean-up in Auburn on May 4th.

Spring has finally rolled around, but for some people, the greening and blooming going on outside only brings the dread of two annually feared occasions: taxes and spring cleaning. Luckily, taxes should be checked off the list by now, and spring cleaning is a much more fun experience if it is done with other people.

Auburn residents, then, should jump at the town’s annual Town-Wide Clean-Up Day on Saturday, May 4th from 8:30 through 11:30 am. The Clean-Up Committee, co-chaired by Auburn Fire Chief Stephen Coleman and retired Auburn Fire Chief Roger Belhumeur, are looking for volunteer support from Chamber members, local civic clubs and organizations, youth groups, students, and residents to help clean up the town.

“We’ve been doing this for 20 years now; it’s an ongoing event sponsored by the Auburn Chamber of Congress to ultimately clean up and beautify the town,” says Eleanor Houbre, Director at the AuburnChamber of Congress.

Registration runs from 8:30-9:00 a.m. on the morning of the clean up, and will be held at Drury Sq. Fire Station. Here, volunteers will pick up their clean-up supplies—all donated by Masterman’s ofAuburn—and will be assigned specific areas to clean throughout the town.

As to what volunteers will be doing, there will be various different assignments.

“Specifically, this year we plan to target the removal of old tires in locations around the town due to mosquito breeding and West Nile Virus concerns,” says Houbre. “The Auburn DPW will be working with us to tell us where the tires are located, and we will send teams out to remove them.”

Other tasks include clean-ups of certain areas of town, including particular businesses’ properties, by planting flowers and spreading mulch. Children, too, are invited to join the spring cleaning.

“Elementary school student volunteers will go to their schools and plant flowers. Kids will receive clear bags for collecting recycling. They will also be painting over outside activities on the pavement, such as hopscotch,” says Houbre.

The town-wide spring cleaning is set to run from 9:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. Afterwards, all volunteers are invited to a complimentary lunch sponsored by Outback Steakhouse, located on 771 Southbridge Street in Auburn.

This year, Hometown Bank will also be holding a free community shredder day from 8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. at the Heritage Plaza location 569 Southbridge St. Community members are invited to shred up to three boxes of confidential documents on-site.

In addition, Republic Services will take any metal items to recycle. There will be a dumpster at the Fire Station the morning of the event. Reminder that these items need to be full metal only; examples of items include lawn mowers, washers and dryers, bicycles, and snow blowers.

If you have any questions or would like to volunteer to help on May 4, contact Eleanor Houbre, Director, Auburn Chamber of Commerce 508-753-2924, ext. 224 or email [email protected]. Your participation will surely make the difference!

“The support that we are getting from donations is fantastic,” says Houbre. “We are hoping we will have a beautiful day and a lot of volunteers.”
