"Deeper than just a dance show": Sokeo Ros

Instead of following or falling into a negative path, talented young artists have channeled their energy into something that they are passionate about, their art.

On September 9, Everett Dance Theatre presents Case Closed! with "Daydream in the Ghetto," a performance about living in a world where opportunities are offered based more on where you come from, rather than on who you are. It expresses what it’s like to maneuver around obstacles to reach a goal, and it explores choices given and choices made.

“People will feel something deeper than just seeing a dance show,” said Sokeo Ros, Choreographer. “They are witnessing a performance done by a group of young artists that are baring themselves on stage.”

Sokeo Ros's Case Closed!

Case Closed! is a professional troupe of young dancers, who create and perform together using hip hop as their core form and classical dance as a trajectory. Case Closed! was founded by Sokeo Ros in 2004 to promote empowerment of youth through the arts. Sokeo is a choreographer, teacher, and company member of Everett Dance Theatre. He has performed nationally and brought his unique teaching methods to communities and schools across New England.

Everett brings diverse art to diverse audiences. With a 25-year history, and a Company that tours nationally, Everett is at the forefront of integrating art and community.

Overcoming negativity through creativity

"Daydream in the Ghetto" is the story of overcoming negativity through creativity, of moving through darkness towards light, of choosing to do the right thing despite how wrong the world sometimes feels. “You can choose right or wrong. There are negative and positive aspects in life,” said Ros. “It is up to them to make their own choices towards their passion and what they believe in. They display this on stage through their poetry, story telling, and dance.”

“Watching this performance is almost like you are a part of it as well,” said Ros. “The reality and truth of these stories along with the dancing makes the show deeper and stronger.”

Everett presents Case Closed! Carriage House, 9 Duncan Avenue, Providence. Friday, September 9 at 8:30pm, Doors open 8pm, Tickets $5.
