Fit for Life: Do You Have 2 Brains??

Saturday, January 25, 2020

Matt Espeut

The human brain is an intricate organ.

I was reading an article about the human brain and the theory is that people are either left-brained or right-brained, meaning that one side of their brain is dominant. (Full disclosure, most of this article is copied)

However, I added some of my own opinions at the end, and you will recognize that some of the scientific data is what I preach on a daily basis.

If you’re mostly analytical and methodical in your thinking, you’re said to be left-brained.

If you tend to be more creative or artistic, you’re thought to be right-brained.

The left brain is more verbal, analytical, and orderly than the right brain.

It’s sometimes called the digital brain.

It’s better at things like reading, writing, and computations.

    •    logic

    •    sequencing

    •    linear thinking

    •    mathematics

    •    facts

    •    thinking in words

The right brain is more visual and intuitive.

It’s sometimes referred to as the analog brain.

It has a more creative and less organized way of thinking.

    •    imagination

    •    holistic thinking

    •    intuition

    •    arts

    •    rhythm

    •    nonverbal cues

    •    feelings visualization

    •    daydreaming

Here are a few tips to keep your brain stimulated:

    •    Spend some time each day reading, writing, or both.

    •    Never stop learning.

    •    Take a class, go to a lecture, or try to acquire a new skill.

    •    Tackle challenging tasks

    •    Take on a new hobby that requires you to focus.

In addition to thinking exercises, your brain benefits from a good physical workout.

Just 120 minutes (30 minutes a day like we do at PFBBC) of physical exercise a week can help improve learning and verbal memory.

Avoid junk food and be sure to get all the essential nutrients you need through diet or dietary supplements.

And, of course, aim for a full night’s sleep every night.

Ok so there it is, the scientific explanation for how the brain works, now it’s time for me to add my opinion.

We all have one brain, but sometimes it feels like we have two that conflict each other throughout the day, and they create a lot of confusion when it comes time to make decisions.

Do you realize that every thought comes from your brain, and every action or decision we make is manipulated from our thoughts.

So why are we all so different when it comes to things like being fit, successful, happy, and vital in our everyday lives?

It’s because of our thought process is controlled by the nutrients we have been fed and are feeding ourselves daily.

Both physical and mental.

On a mental standpoint, do you watch the news, gossip, hang around with toxic people, complain about the weather, find fault or problems with everything you do?

Were you raised around negative people, do you argue with everyone, and feel like the world is always out to “get you”?

If you answered yes to any of those questions, then you are filling your head with toxic cognitions, and will never be happy, satisfied, or fulfilled. These are the bad nutrients, comparable to eating sugar, and chemicals and saturated fat.

You say things like, “I was overlooked again for that promotion”, or “the boss is out to get me”, or I will never be in shape and healthy because of my genetic makeup.

Instead of thinking, “Damn, I got overlooked again, what could I do better”? or, “My family has a history of obesity and health issues, so I am going to try harder to beat the odds.”

If you have been fed these bad mental nutrients, it is likely that you will struggle, and not make the decisions required to step out from beneath the dark cloud that you let linger over your head unless you take the steps to change how you think.

If you worry about the news, and complain about the weather, then you are letting negative energy fester over things you have no control over anyway.

Don’t like snow? Too bad, deal with it or move somewhere else.

Don’t like the President? Again, deal with it, control your own economy, and work around the things you can because letting these things eat away at you is a waste of time and energy.

50% of the people will like him, 50% don’t regardless who’s in office, and we have survived through good and bad presidents for years, so stop letting it create negative thoughts and stop getting mad at the things you can’t change.

The same goes for your physical state and the decisions you make about the nutrients you put into your body. If you eat like crap, you will look and feel like crap. On top of it, you will perform at a lower level, and be miserable all the time.

This is something you can control, and when you take action to improve your situation, great things happen.

So, with that being said, science and biology do control some parts of our existence, and which side of our brain is more dominant.

HOWEVER, WE CONTROL who we associate with, when to turn off the tv, our thought processes, what to eat, and how we are going to conduct our lives.

We decide how hard to work, how hard we push ourselves, how well we do things, and how we take care of ourselves.

It’s our thoughts that control our actions, and our thoughts can be controlled by how much effort we decide to put into self-improvement.

Whether you are analytical or creative, it’s entirely up to you to take control of your thought processes, so if you are unfit, unhappy, cynical and hate the world, don’t blame science or biology, start making better decisions and seek coaches, books, podcasts, and seminars that will motivate you to establish personal growth.
