Fit for Life: Success the “Patriot Way”

Saturday, February 09, 2019

Love ‘em, or hate ‘em, The New England Patriots have confirmed that they are the most successful team in sports history.

No one has ever seen a run like this in any sport!!

Since the Brady / Belichick era, 18 years ago, they have had only one losing season. Their first season as a duo.

Since then they have won 16 AFC East Division Titles, and made 13 Appearances in the AFC Championship game.

They have appeared in 9 Super Bowls, and won 6 of them, with 3 in the last 5 years!!

So how is this possible?

Every team has the same opportunities.

The salary cap limits the number of overpaid superstars you can have on a team.

All the players in the NFL are big, fast, and are getting paid to be professional athletes.

So, what gives?

How can one team be so successful when teams like the Cleveland Browns & NY Jets always have terrible seasons, and never make the playoffs?

I have compiled a list of reasons why I think they are so successful, and how implementing some of these traits in our everyday life can help us reach success on all levels of our lives.

They disregard what the critics say. Reporters have had Tom Brady retired 5 years ago, yet he still continues to prove them wrong. They have also been criticized for cheating and being treated more favorably by the referees. They have a code in the locker room, and they don’t talk or pay attention to outside criticism. They focus on their jobs, mind their own business, and keep winning. When we avoid gossip, and letting negative energy bring us down, focusing on our mission gets a lot easier.

They never lose their drive for success. The more they win, the more they want it. Sometimes we get complacent when we chalk up a victory and sit back on our heels. When we lose our hunger and drive, success becomes more difficult to achieve. You need to keep a winner’s mindset even after you win, then keep striving for success even more, regardless of your goals or mission.

Hard work and preparation: I read something from Bill Bilichick after a previous Super Bowl win where he said, “We will enjoy this for sure, however we are 3 weeks late getting ready for next season”. Meaning that every other team has already been scouting and prepping because their season ended three weeks ago. The most successful players are at practice early and are watching film after everyone else has gone home. Thats what it takes to be successful. You can’t pass a test studying an hour before. You need the preparation and hard work to gain a favorable outcome. When you prepare, your tasks become a lot less stressful, and the quality of your work rises to a higher level.

They get back up after they get knocked down. TB was suspended for 4 games then won the Super Bowl that year. They lost 2 to the Giants in dramatic fashion and came back to win two more before being defeated again by the Eagles. Then they came back and won again this year. Most teams that lose a super bowl, or have their best player suspended, end up on the bottom of the heap the following year. Not the Pats, and not you either. It’s not a matter of “if” you will get knocked down, but a matter of when, and the question is…how will you handle it? We have 2 choices, get up and keep fighting, or lay down and die.

They have a system. It’s like working for Starbucks or Mc Donalds. They create a system based on the game plan and not the players. Thats why they can lose good players and still win. They rely on the system in place and plug the best player in that position. When someone quits at Mc Donalds, the next person knows to put 2 pickles, and one pump of ketchup on the burger. The same goes for the plays in the book. When you run a route, take 5 steps, turn left and the ball will be there. That way a player can just study the plays and prepare themselves, so they fit in the system. It’s best when we create systems for our daily routines. Get up, make coffee, stretch, and attack the first 3 things on your to do list. Systemize your life a little, and get more accomplished, putting you in a better position to succeed.

I was talking with a good friend the other day, and he said an interesting quote. He said, “Success needs to become a habit, and not a grind”.

That resonated with me, and I analyze it like this. When you prepare, focus, get your mind right, and work hard on completing the important tasks in life, things get a little easier. If you can chalk up small victories every day, and move the needle forward, success on many levels will follow. When you don’t do these things and move about your day haphazardly, life becomes a grind.

Emulate success, leave the critics behind, work smart, work hard, and it’s very unlikely that you won’t achieve success in any and all areas of your life.

Brady in the Clutch

Game-winning drives: The Patriots haven’t always needed Brady to rescue them, but he’s always up to the task when the time calls for Touchdown Tom. He needs just two more to tie Manning’s 56 and three more to pass him. Brady averages about two or three a year, so he could realistically top Manning in 2018.

4th Quarter Comebacks

A record Brady does not own, but soon could.

Fourth-quarter comebacks: Brady has a good chance at topping Manning’s 45 fourth-quarterback comebacks. He’s just one behind that record and could beat it in 2019.
