In Worcester This Weekend May 9-11

Friday, May 09, 2014

Mother’s Day is on Sunday and there are two great events to check out this weekend in Worcester.

Grimeiversary

The only thing I appreciate more than super hip outfits are good deals, and Grime has been providing Worcester with both for the past three years. Owner Molly McGrath started Grime three years ago on Grove Street, and moved into a larger location last spring at 356 Shrewsbury Street. She will be celebrating “Grimeiversary” this Saturday from 11 am to 7 pm with a day-long in store event.

McGrath jokes, “I am completely shocked I have successfully kept this business going for three years,” and loves the “constant creativity” she is able to reinvent her store with. Grime’s Instagram and Facebook pages are filled with promotions, customers showing off their new clothes, and even awkward employee throwback pictures from middle school. McGrath’s nonstop energy and endless stream of new ideas keeps her business fresh and engages customers.

Aside from Grime’s usual selection of gently used clothes, vintage kings Joe Abramoff and Jonathan Evans will have pop-up shops filled with vintage clothes, records, and sports items. I was actually lying when I said I appreciated super hip outfits, my wardrobe mostly consists of t-shirts, half of which reflect my love of wrestling, and I can always count on Joe Abramoff to come through with amazing old school WWE gear.

Every party needs a solid soundtrack, and Worcester celebrity Jon Strader will be DJing all afternoon. “I love what Molly and Grime have brought to Worcester,” he said, “It’s like a great game of Ping-Pong when music and fashion come together”. There will also be an assortment of freebies, gift cards, and coupons for shoppers who spend over $35.

Grime has come a long way in three years, and McGrath does not show any signs of slowing down. She plans to launch Grime online for June 1. Customers can look forward to “new inventory and having selective vintage pieces”. In the meantime, check out “Grimeiversay” on Saturday and stock up on cool summer clothes, listen to some chill jams, and support a local business.

Twine’s Floral Design pop-up shop

Being a mom is hard work, so it’s important to show how much you care, and the Twine Floral Design pop-up flower shop on Sunday May 11 will have everything you need to knock this Mother’s Day out of the park.

Twines, a home based floral studio owned by Worcester resident Nicole Gingras, will be open at 8 am in the Donut Cafe II parking lot on 414 Chandler Street. Gingras always dreamed of opening her own flower shop, and her dream is becoming a reality after graduating from Rittner’s School of Floral Design earlier this year.

Gingras knew a pop-up shop would be the perfect way to showcase her Mother’s Day arrangements, and she’s looking forward to incorporating a small business. “When I got the opportunity to work with the Donut Cafe II, I really felt like it was a good way to tie in the city and another local family business,” she said.

“I really like to push the limit of flowers and use bright and colorful blooms”, Gingras explained. Twines pop-up shop will be stocked with various wrapped bouquets, mini arrangements, and hanging plants. You can also expect plenty of smaller arrangements in mason jars and other funky containers that are easy to grab and go. Make sure you ask to see Gingras’ other whimsical designs that are available for pre-order.

Twine’s Floral Design pop-up shop is a great way to support a new small business and make this an awesome Mother’s Day for the special lady who’s always been there for you. I’m going to stop by bright and early for flowers and a half-dozen donuts from the Donut Cafe II. Best Mother’s Day ever.

This is that weird time of year when it’s warm enough for limited outdoor activities, but there’s still a couple weeks until yard sale season kicks into gear.

Naughty Bingo

Friday 7pm

Marlborough Moose Lodge

67 Fitchburg St

I get that Marlborough is kind of pushing it for Worcester things to do, but this is Naughty Bingo, and I’m willing to bet it would be a first for most people.

It’s $25 for three cards, a portion of the proceeds will be donated to Athena’s Cup for breast cancer awareness, plus you’ll have the chance to win any number of “Athena’s Home Novelty” products.

I’ll be enjoying the pizza over at the cash bar while I check “naughty bingo” off my bucket list and try to make some new friends.

Book Sale

Saturday 10am - 2pm

8 Newton St West Boylston

There’s nothing like a morning of book hunting to offset a crazy night spent playing Naughty Bingo at a Moose Lodge.

This is the last day of the Beaman Public Library’s Annual Book Sale, and I plan on getting there bright and early to score some good reads.

You can fill a brown grocery bag for $5, but please refrain from loading up on five minute mysteries, I’m trying to score a bunch to read on the beach all summer.

Farmers Market

Saturday 11am - 2pm

Canal District Farmers Market

138 Green St

Normally I do all of my shopping at Price Rite because I am on an incredibly fixed income, but every once in a while I like to treat myself.

The weekly Canal District Farmers Market is a great place to support local businesses and reward yourself with organic goodies after clawing your way through the old rat race all week long. I’m thinking fresh flowers from FiveFork Farms would look lovely on my desk, or I could splurge on Elzire’s Acres goats milk soap.

Either way, I’m not leaving until I stuff my face with at least one cupcake from ConoBeni Confections. Vendors rotate every week, but you can always score tons of fresh meats and veggies from nearby farms.

Take a Hike

Boynton Park

Mower St

After this winter, I feel like it could still start snowing at any point, but I’m going to cautiously trust Harvey Leonard and gear up for nice weather this weekend.

I have to spend Sunday with my new Dungeons and Dragons crew, but everyone else should take advantage of spring at Boynton Park. It has marked trails, natural cascades, and is Worcester’s unofficial off-leash dog park.

There’s usually a dog party occurring in the baseball fields, but my basset hound and I are loners, so we stick to the trails. Either way, it’s a fun spot to get some fresh air and a little exercise.

Cinemageddon

9pm - 1am

Ralphs

148 Grove Street

I’m not into that whole “Sunday funday” mentality, but Cinemageddon at Ralphs is my favorite way to end the weekend.

Anthony Bridgford projects a movie every Sunday in the diner, ranging from cult classics to b horror flicks. This week’s showcase is “Uncle Buck”, and if that isn’t enough to catch your attention, hotdogs are included to the usual menu of burgers and chili as an added bonus.

So get cozy in a booth, brace yourself for the upcoming week with an ice cold PBR, and die of laughter as John Candy kills it in one of his classic films.
