Jules and Rascal Runs To Benefit Dana-Farber
Tuesday, May 14, 2013
The 4th annual Jules and Rascal Runs for Dana-Farber cancer research will take place on June 8th at the Pappas Recreation Complex in Auburn. The Jules event will begin at 10 am and feature a three mile walk, a three mile run and a five mile run. The Rascal Run for kids (4-12) will begin at 11 am. Proceeds from the event go to Dana-Farber.
"More than ever we need to have a positive community event given the horrific events that happened in Boston. The marathon experience itself is the reason I chose to put on a road race - to bring the joy, inspirational moments, pride, hard work, unity, remembrance, and fun to our town," says Kathleen Lutz, RD for the Jules Run and Rascal Run for Dana-Farber
"If we can help people get together doing something fun/healthy for cancer research we can help to empower others. Cancer can leave us all feeling helpless/useless against this terrible disease. But when you empower one you empower many - of all ages. We need to do difficult things to help others do difficult things. I want to give people the opportunity to be very helpful in a very personal way through running. We remember, we care, we push on."
Three Inspirational Stories
It just four short years the race has done much to benefit Dana Farber and produced a number of inspirational stories. Kathleen relays a few: of a boy whose mother had recently passed away from cancer, of a kid named Daniel recovering from the disease and of a passionate mother.
"A boy ran for his Mom that is gone. He was struggling as he ran, in pain, and just missing his mom. He dedicated his run for her that day and I couldn’t be more proud to associated with that moment."
"Daniel’s hair was still growing back when I stood next to him at the announcements for the race last year. I had a speech planned and draft in my pocket but it all left me as we stood together up there in front of all the runners waiting for him to say 'ready-set-go!' Daniel had a bigger-than-life smile. Again, I couldn’t be more honored to be a part of that moment."
"A mom in town runs and her shirt reads 'cancer s*cks'. She is strong, healthy, and has two beautiful children. To see her strength is amazing. She deserves every bit of that race and a chance to wear that shirt."
This year's run will surely produce even more inspirational stories. One team of note is Team Emily. Emily was just diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma. Her friend, Ali, is rallying friends to come out that day to support her. There is plenty more where that comes from.
