NEW: Food, Benefits for RIers Who Lost Food in Storm

Thursday, September 01, 2011

It's the potentially devastating final effect of Irene.

Many Rhode Island residents without power for more than 24 hours lost all refrigerated and frozen food items amounting to millions of pounds of food and millions of dollars lost. This "hidden" cost of the storm hit low income households especially hard.

The Rhode Island Community Food Bank has a network of food pantries making emergency food available to those is need.  The list can be found on their Web site. Go to: Food pantries.

Also, SNAP (food stamps) recipients can have the cost of lost food (up to the amount of their monthly SNAP benefit) replaced through replacement SNAP benefits.  In order to get this special SNAP allotment, recipients must complete this FORM and bring it to their local DHS office within 10 days of the date of loss.  Any questions, call the SNAP outreach project toll-free information line, 866-306-0270.
