NEW: Which RI City is One of America’s Weirdest?

Wednesday, November 30, 2011

Who's quirky? We're quirky!

Here's a new one.

Rhode Island has one of the Top 10 Weirdest Cities in the Country, beating out odd-ball enclaves such as Savannah, GA and Seattle, WA, not to mention eccentric hotbeds like New York City, LA, and Las Vegas.

And the winner? Providence.

Fly your freak flag

The honor comes from none other than the readers of Travel + Leisure, who voted on "which cities fly their freak flags the highest." The brand-new results in the December 2011 issue hand Providence the #6 ranking.

Surveying its large readership on the relative merits of 35 major cities in travel categories for its annual America's Favorite Cities survey, an "offbeat" category yielded the capital city enough votes to land just outside the Top 5. The big winners are New Orleans (#1), Santa Fe, NM (#2), Austin, TX (#3), Portland, OR (#4), and San Francisco (#5).

Even the pizza is quirky

"The Rhode Island capital gets its flair from loads of college students and artists," says T+L writer Katrina Brown Hunt. "Head to the West End for a concentration of underground galleries and avant-garde performance spaces. After all, Providence ranked No. 3 for its theater scene. Even its No. 2–ranked pizza—often grilled—is quirky."

Providence was only 1 of 2 New England Cities in the Top 20. Portland, ME, took the weirdly respectable #10 slot. Boston? Nowhere to be seen.
