Providence One of America’s Most Sports-Crazed Cities
Monday, November 14, 2011
But what we really love is our sports teams, and the editors at Travel + Leisure have taken notice, naming Providence the #10 Sports-Crazed City in America.
This is the latest round of shout-outs from T+L's America's Favorite Cities 2011 survey-- a ranking of 35 US cities on food, people, nightlife, and more. Providence adds to its laurels in the arenas of hamburgers (#1), base for day trips (#2), pizza (#2), summer getaway (#3), and fall getaway (#3), with this latest designation.
Behind the crazy
"Rhode Island sports enthusiasts are often happy to hop a train to support Boston teams," according to T+L's Katrina Brown Hunt, "but if you're staying local, the Dunkin' Donuts Center--home of the beloved Providence College Friars basketball--is well situated near some of the city's highly ranked micropubs, such as Trinity Brewhouse and Union Station." (See beer, above.)
T+L also shouts out our love of the "AAA baseball Pawtucket Red Sox," and reminds the world that the stadium was home to the longest game in professional baseball history (33 innings).
Providence, sadly, was outpaced by Boston, with a big #2 finish., but bested the only other New England city in the top 35: Portland, ME, far behind at #22.
