Seen: Eric Clapton, James Woods, & More

Wednesday, July 20, 2011

Block Island continues to take the lowest low-key of attitudes even during peak season, so why wouldn't rock superstar Eric Clapton pick it for some quiet summer hang-out time? Word on the island is that Clapton was hanging out on one of the larger boats moored in the Great Salt Pond, and may have come ashore at Payne's Dock. He's got us on our knees, no matter what...

Keeping with the music theme, Orthodox Jewish reggae rap star (what a mouthful!) Matisyahu (below)rolled through Providence Monday night. The musician is famous for his notoriously wild live performances, and his show at Lupo’s Heartbreak Hotel certainly didn’t disappoint. His unique style got the crowd all riled up, with help from dubstep opener Sub Swara, and the place was an absolute madhouse by the time he invited audience members up on stage for his final song “One Day.” Matisyahu is a perfect fit for Rhode Island, due to our history of religious freedom and tolerance. I wonder if Roger Williams would have liked his music…

He’s an Emmy award winner, frequent guest on Family Guy, and philanthropist, but did you know that James Woods is also a card shark? The Warwick-raised actor is an avid poker player, and we heard that he recently made out pretty well at the MGM Grand Foxwoods Casino in Connecticut. Although he mostly plays in Las Vegas and

LA, it seems he had time to head home for a while to show us East Coasters how it’s done. He often plays on the World Poker Tour for charity and helped found the Web site HollywoodPoker.com, so if you ever find yourself across the table from him, don’t take him lightly…

After so much tragedy, the Kennedy family finally had a happy day last Friday, when Patrick Kennedy married Amy Petitgout, a sixth-grade schoolteacher from New Jersey. Kennedy, who served as a US Congressman from Rhode Island for 16 years, married his sweetheart in Hyannisport on Cape Cod (and on the day after his birthday, too). Of course many members of the famous Kennedy family were there, including his mother Joan, brother Edward Jr., sister Kara, aunts Ethel and Jean, and family friend former US Senator John Tunney (D-CA). After taking a spin in the Nantucket Sound on the late Ted Kennedy’s boat Mya, the family returned to the compound for the nuptials. Their first public appearance as man and wife? In none other than Portsmouth later in July, when they will host a fundraiser for US Senator Sheldon Whitehouse. Expect more Seen spottings at that high-profile event...

A musician from Brown University is really starting to hit it big. Nicolas Jaar combines the styles of house music and dubstep to make psychedelic and bizarrely cool electro-pop. His debut album, Space is Only Noise, was called “Best New Music” on Pitchfork.com, and it was good enough to land him a spot in the famous Glastonbury Festival in England a few weeks ago. He performed on the same stage that Cee-Lo played on a day earlier, and maybe he even got to meet headliners U2 and Coldplay. My question now is how can he go back to studying comparative literature on College Hill after living the life of a rock star?

Pauly D has been claiming that he’s friends with Britney Spears for a while now, and it just might be he wasn’t bluffing. He has been confirmed as the opener for four stops of Spears’ "I Am Femme Fatale" tour. Unfortunately those shows are in Grand Rapids, Pittsburgh, Columbus, and Indianapolis and not Providence, but at least he’ll be out there repping Rhode Island. If you’re lucky enough to go to one of those shows then you’ll get to see the Johnston boy from the Jersey Shore up close and personal, and if not you’ll just have to catch him on MTV…

After coming to the Dunkin’ Donuts Center only a few months ago, Lil Wayne was back in nearby Mansfield on Sunday night with the Far East Movement, Keri Hilson, Lloyd and Rick Ross. His “I Am Still Music” tour stopped by the Comcast Center in Mansfield, and apparently it left a good impression on Weezy. He Tweeted “Mansfield was the best show yet!!!! Super luvvvv!” It’s great he was so enthusiastic considering his recent decision to ban alcohol from backstage at his shows, due to the terms of his probation stating he can’t drink until 2013…
