Seen: Frances McDormand & More Celebs

Wednesday, June 08, 2011

Finally the last of the big stars of Moonrise Kingdom has arrived in Newport! Frances McDormand has been spotted around town when not filming with Bruce Willis and the others for Wes Anderson's latest film. Besides the Fargo actress, Bill Murray seems to have fallen in love with Mexican restaurant Perro Salado! We reported a few weeks ago that he had eaten there, but since then he has returned frequently. And also, crews were seen setting up to film in Portsmouth at the Glen Manor House yesterday, so maybe you can catch a glimpse of them if you swing by the elegant mansion...

Gooooooooal! The Spanish national soccer team, the 2010 World Cup winners, was spotted at the Westin in Providence last week. They played an international friendly match with the US national team at Gillette Stadium on Saturday, and accordingly hotels around town were filled with soccer players, coaches, and fans. Unfortunately, the likes of David Villa, Fernando Torres, and Xabi Alonso beat out the US (who were suffering from Landon Donovan's absence) 4-0, but at least the US knows now that they need to train a little harder to beat the champs! And on the same day the New England Revolution lost to Dallas, what a shame...

People Magazine ran a big feature article on Meredith Vieira and her departure from The Today Show in this week's issue. The exclusive interview with the East Providence-born TV anchor and personality discusses why she decided to leave, debunking the rumor that her husband's poor health caused it. On Thursday, Ann Curry will take the helm of the show while Vieira leaves to spend more time with her family, and (we hope) re-visit her home state. It'll

definitely be sad to not see a Rhode Islander on national TV every morning, but I'm sure we'll see another New Englander on the airwaves soon...

He may be from New Orleans originally, but Next Food Network Star contestant Juba Kali spent many a year studying at Johnson and Wales University in Providence, so we can call him an honorary Rhode Islander. The seventh season of the show premiered on Sunday, and it awards the winner fame and his own show in the channel's lineup. Past winner Guy Fieri has gone on to big things, such as hosting his own show Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives, which featured Providence mainstay Loui's. If Kali wins, he'll be able to bring his Creole-inspired food (with a little JWU flavor, of course) to the masses...

And speaking of cooking shows, a former New England Patriots player has entered the food scene as well. Defensive end Jarvis Green made it on to Gordon Ramsay's show Masterchef, which tries to find the best amateur chefs in the country and crown one the Masterchef. Out of over 1000 applicants, he made it to a group of 100, and then to the final smaller group from there. The second season of the show just premiered on Monday night, and the second half of the episode was broadcast last night.

The two-time Superbowl champ impressed the judges (Ramsay along with wine maker Joe Bastianich and chef Graham Elliot) with his Louisiana-inspired okra gumbo. Green said that all the time he spent around Boston and Providence while on the team exposed him to different cultures and foods and made him more interested in cooking and expanding his palate. He also mentioned that coach Bill Belichick is scarier than Ramsay by far...
