Seen: John Legend & More Celebs in the 401

Wednesday, May 04, 2011

This just in: Grammy-award winner John Legend will be in Providence on Thursday, June 2. He’ll be in town for the annual dinner of City Year Rhode Island, a group that mentors and provides services to underprivileged Rhode Island youth. The event will take place at the Rhode Island Convention Center, where Legend will speak and then sing. The musician/recording artist/actor is definitely qualified to speak for such a charitable cause, as he established the Show Me Campaign to help impoverished African villages, and he has also supported numerous other such foundations. If you can get in to see him, I’m sure his performance will be Legend…ary!

I bet Richard Hatch is longing for the luxury of Trump Towers right about now, as he has re-entered The Big House to serve nine more months for tax evasion. The Newport-born Survivor winner has already served three and a half years for not reporting his winnings to the IRS, but because he violated the terms of his release by again failing to file tax returns, he is now serving another sentence at the Metropolitan Detention Center

in Brooklyn. He entered on April 29, and should be released on December 12, although Donald Trump reportedly would “spring” him from prison if he needed him back for the finale of the Celebrity Apprentice finale (from which Hatch was recently eliminated). For a guy who outwitted, outplayed, and outlasted all the other survivor contestants, he has sure acted pretty unwisely when it comes to making financial decisions…

Acclaimed director Wes Anderson has started shooting for his feature film Moonrise Kingdom. He was on Prudence Island this weekend, most likely just doing some principal photography for the movie, as none of the big stars (Bruce Willis, Bill Murray, etc.) have arrived yet in Little Rhody. The major shooting for the film about two young New England lovers isn’t expected to start until early summer, but it’s still exciting to have such a famous director here and appreciating the natural beauty of Newport. Did you see him?

And now for the obligatory DJ Pauly D news: the Jersey Shore boy from Johnston was seen on Tuesday hanging around in Providence’s Wayland Square. He was spotted in front of Angell Street

Dental Associates, but it’s unclear whether or not he was actually getting any work done on his grill. Pauly was also on the national radar this weekend, as he voiced a character on a new episode of The Simpsons Sunday night. He played “Stevie B,” one of three nephews (played by his fellow Jersey Shore cast members) of mobster Fat Tony. Stevie bears a pretty striking resemblance to Pauly, don’t you think? Good for him, everyone knows you’ve really made it when you get to voice a Simpsons character…
