Shepard Fairey Steps Up for Animals

Rhode Island's world-renowned iconographer put his name and style behind helping homeless animals get a roof over their heads. First, Fairey created a red and blue Limited Edition ADOPT print on behalf of Adopt-a-Pet.com, a resource for funding animal shelters. That, and a second printing, sold out. Then, a wave of shirts and stickers helped spread the message. Now, free downloads of his distinctive image allow everyone to support the cause, with the encouragement of Fairey to download, print, and post (the site even makes it easy, with 8x10, 11x17, and 15x23 prints, plus a coloring-book-style 8x10 to fill in). Speaking out for shelter animals
"Homeless pets urgently need us to take the lead and speak out on their behalf, now more than ever!" Fairey has said.
According to Adopt-a-Pet.com spokesperson Dr. Pia Salk, who initiated the on-going collaboration with Fairey, “Shepard’s dedication to all victims of injustice, regardless of species, provides an example of what it means to ‘Lead By Example’," she said. "The‘Lead By Example’ image is really a call to action to raise awareness for the plight of shelter animals nationwide. The economic downturn is hitting these animals harder than ever. Record numbers of loyal family pets are being relinquished to already overcrowded shelters.”
“Sadly, these innocent victims are paying the price for our crisis with their lives," she added. "We at Adopt-a-Pet.com are more committed than ever to getting the millions of great shelter animals currently waiting to be adopted, into loving homes."
Fairey + pooches
Fairey, an outspoken advocate for social justice "regardless of gender, race, sexual orientation or in this case, species!," as he says, created the image for the campaign based on a dog he had as a boy, "a mutt named Honey." Fairey shares his and his wife's home with "2 pooches, George and Weezie, who is a rescue," he says. "They are the happy canine siblings to our two human daughters."
