Where the Smart Kids Are Going to College

Wednesday, June 15, 2011

As Rhode Island's senior class graduates in ceremonies from Woonsocket to Westerly, from public, parochial, charter, and independent schools, here is a look at where the top 3 students at RI's high schools are going to college in the fall.

Trend: Engineering in Worcester and elsewhere
A remarkable number of top achievers in Rhode Island are heading to Worcester Polytechnic Institute (from eight schools) as well as Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) and Olin, all top-shelf engineering programs.

Trend: URI... close to home, lower rates
In an ever-intimidating economy, top students from 18 high schools chose URI for their fall destination.

Trend: Low-income schools placing in the Ivies
The Ivy League has been pushing on two fronts: to make tuition based on income, and to get out the word to bright, low-income students. The results are here in RI this year.
