slides: 10 Most Dangerous Intersections in Rhode Island - 2014

Monday, February 24, 2014

If you're from Rhode Island, chances are you know -- or at least have a good idea -- of where the trouble spots are for driving in the state.

Whether it's exits off of Pawtucket's I-95 S-curve, which now boasts highly visible signage alerting drivers to the terrain thank to a 2011 grant, or the Thurber's Avenue curve just further south, there are the ones that everyone knows about.

However, a number of accidents have occurred -- some serious -- at intersections in locations including North Smithfield, Johnston, and Charlestown.

"I know exactly where the problem is," said Johnston Police Major Joseph Razza, of the high level of incidents at Route 6 and 295. "It's right on front of Metro Honda. The problem there is that people come down the off-ramp, look to see if they can flow into traffic, then don't realize the person in front of them is stopped."

Razza said he knew of a solution to a similar traffic issue in Providence. "At Eagle Street, coming off of Route 6 East, they made an individual lane for people going straight, and additional lanes for turns." Of the 295 issue, Razza said, "If it's something we should reach out to the state about addressing, maybe we should."

Razza noted that Johnston was pleased with one recent traffic change made. "We were very happy to see that they reengineered the road by the Atwood [Avenue] police station. They went from 4 lanes down to 1, which was critical with the school there. They've certainly paid attention."
