Crime Data: On-Campus Criminal Offenses at Colleges in Worcester

Thursday, February 05, 2015

According to the U.S. Department of Education, there were a combined 221 violent crimes and property crimes committed on eight college campuses in Worcester between 2011 (82), 2012 (69) and 2013 (70). The violent and property crimes included forcible rape, aggravated assault, burglary, motor vehicle theft, arson, robbery and one case of murder/nonnegligent manslaughter.

"Any urban campus has its challenges, but through vigilance and open communication with the campus community we work to ensure a safe environment for our students and employees," said Stephen Goulet, Campus Police Chief at Clark University.

The eight institutions considered in this report are Assumption College, Becker College, Clark University, College of the Holy Cross, Quinsigamond Community College, UMass Medical School, WPI, and Worcester State University.

As GoLocal Worcester has previously reported, many crimes, specifically sexual assault, go unreported among Worcester colleges.

Katherine Richey, Violence Prevention Coordinator at WPI, told GoLocal, "There are a lot of issues in terms of reporting accurate data when it comes to sexual assault on college campuses. If they are reported in confidentiality then the data may not be available. The size of a campus can definitely make a difference in how comfortable a victim is in reporting the assault. If the campus is smaller, then there is a much greater risk that the victim may be interacting with the perpetrator on a consistent basis.”

Crime Data at Worcester Colleges By the Numbers

Of the course of the three years, the three highest totals of criminal offense were:

Over that same period, the three Worcester schools with the highest total of violent and property crimes are:

1. Clark University - 56 incidents
