Former Celtics Star Jo Jo White to Speak at Sullivan Middle School

Tuesday, March 10, 2015

Sullivan Middle School (SMS) will be hosting former Boston Celtics great Jo Jo White on Thursday. White will be speaking to SMS students as part of the school's Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) initiative.

Last month, Sullivan announced that the school received an anonymous $10,000 donation through the Worcester Education Development Foundation, Inc. (WEDF) to help support the PBIS program and to provide programs such as White's motivational speech.

Dr. Josephine Robertson, Principal at Sullivan Middle, said, “The focus of SMS this year is the ‘Whole Child.’ In order to achieve this, we have spent time developing not only the Academic strand of our Instructional Framework, but we have also increased our attention on the Social Competency strand. We have introduced a character development program that introduces our students to personalities who have risen above adversity and exhibited strong, positive decision making.

The students at Sullivan have been reading White's novel Make It Count. White will speak about his life experiences and Sullivan students will have the opportunity to interact with White. "Our team chose March for Mr. White’s talk with the goal of providing a motivational experience prior to spring assessment time. Our deepest appreciation and thanks to the anonymous donor who has seen value in our students and has chosen to partner with us for this much-needed program of character development," said Robertson.

“WEDF is excited to support Dr. Robertson and her team in their initiatives to address the ‘Whole Child’ at SMS. We appreciate that this donation was made with confidence in both WEDF and SMS to support this very important work,” said Stephen Pitcher, President of WEDF
